Week 6

My new progress towards my NETS-T is to incorporate video with my trial lesson. Next year I think this would be great for my students. I would want my students to dress for their part (for extra credit) and really present the workings of a mock trial. I still want my students to blog about the trial but I think that using video will enhance my student’s ability to analyze what is going on.

I also would love for my students to have a mic attached to them so that they cannot miss speaking into the microphone. In order to do this, I will have to talk to the IT guy in our building. Another person I will need to use much more in the future to learn from is our drama and TV production people in the building. I contacted them late this year and the feedback and information they gave me was great. Getting in touch with them next year will help immensely.

We have used wireless microphones with video equipment in the past. They really work well as long as the students use them properly. Sometimes the students will forget to turn them to the right channel, or there will be battery problems and then you get no audio at all. But when they work you get much better sound than when you are just using the microphone on the camera.

There is something about video that always seems to enhance communication. Students love to use video and the act of seeing and hearing students do something really improves the communication.

  2. Eric,

I really want to get microphones for the computers at my school as well. I gave an assignment for the kids to do a screencast, and many could not since they did not have a microphone with their computer at home. They needed to borrow my laptop. Sounds like we have similar issues.

I hope you have lots of success with that project next year.

  3. I think that this is an amazing idea. Students love making videos and being able to perform with a purpose. In addition, it could be a valuable tool for your students to reflect with. They could judge their performance and look at ways they could improve.

  4. Chris,

Thanks for the feedback on the wireless mics. Sounds like they have some of the same drawbacks as regular mics except that more things can go wrong. I agree with you that video enhances students experience. I think being able to edit their own video might even strengthen the project. Thanks.

  5. Kim and Richard,

Thanks for the posts. Kim, I love hearing that we share interests and issues because it tells me that eventually there will be too many of us to ignore.

    Mr. Westling,

As a former player/coach, the idea to incorporate video into your lesson makes great sense. When a hitter in baseball or a shooting guard in basketball is having trouble with their craft, they always turn to video to review what they are doing, and immediately are able to point out the problems and work them out. Allowing students to step back from the project and see what they have created can greatly impact the learning that goes on within your project.
